Fall fashion week is here and I am extremely excited. Not only is the idea of the high fashion shows in Paris, Milan and New York exhilarating, but so is the whole idea of back to school fashion. I love nothing more than coming back to school and seeing all the different outfits that people have on.
It always seems like there's a mix of clothing choices at Rutgers. There's everything from the absurdly lazy to the high-end. Of course there are the staples like flip-flops, leggings, T-shirts and jeans. Then there are the trends like motorcycle jackets, high--waisted pants and over-the-knee boots, among other items. The most fascinating thing about back-to-school fashion is the mixture of the charming and not so charming outfits.
In the not-so-charming category are the super-short, almost non-existent shorts that some girls like to wear. They pair these shorts with such a long shirt that it really does look like they are not wearing any bottoms. Can we please kill this trend? The only time you should look like you are not wearing any pants is when you're doing the walk of shame, not when you are walking to Orgo at two in the afternoon.
Another trend that should die is the flip-flops and socks trend. I understand it gets cold out and people still want to wear their gold Havaianas, but flip-flops are not meant to be worn with socks. If they were, then there wouldn't be toe-straps on them. Plus have you ever really looked at socks and flip-flops together? They look foolish. Save the socks for the cold and the flip-flops for the hot. Get moccasins or clogs if you want to be lazy and wear socks.
Then there are the charming outfits like sundresses that have been reattributed for the cooler weather. Ladies all around campus have been sporting the chicest sundresses in various shades with cardigans, leggings, jackets and boots. They're cute, cozy and completely fashionable. This is certainly one trend that can stay, it's by no means visually assaulting.
Back-to-school fashion is a harmony between being in college but still wanting to be attractive — and that's applauded. There are some things that should not be worn and other outfits that can stay. One thing is for sure: College is certainly the best place to find everything and anything you can imagine in fashion. Here's to a semester of fashion not just a week.
