Oversize bag, skinny jeans, slouchy tee, rocker accessories — this has been the uniform from New York to California for the past few seasons. The fashion world is now ready for a major overhaul. We're talking less Taylor Momsen, more Katharine Hepburn. The '40s icon was famous for breaking down the barriers of what was acceptable for women at the time with her high-waisted trousers, which she wore both on and off set. Hepburn's classic button-down blouses get an even sexier feel for fall with rich hues and fiery red accessories. If you're feeling especially bold and sexy check out Ashley Greene's chic red separates and dare to don them.
When we say "back to basics" we mean business. The new trend calls for minimal accessorizing, too. Take Coco Chanel's advice of removing one accessory before you leave the house and remove four. But leave the pearls to grandma, they will only make the look more dated; a clean neckline speaks volumes. While we're heading away from skinny in the pants department, full knee length skirts bring a bit of '50s flair. Classy décolleté seen on the runways makes this housewife no June Cleaver.
Unlike last year where Balmain's vampy leather-and-chains look started a cult following of rocked-out guys and girls, this season bore no spikes or embellishments. According to Teen Vogue, "The message came through loud and clear on the fall runways: Clean up your act!" (That means you Ms. Momsen). Neutral tones such as camel, white and black with a pop of red will get you the look. Not everyone has the cash for a whole new wardrobe, but if you feel the minimalist trend calling your name, a beige-toned trench is the perfect fix.
As with many trends, most stores have yet to embrace these new silhouettes so the mall probably won't be on board with the trend for at least another season. We've all probably amassed dozens of skinny jeans, leggings, and the awful sounding but super comfortable jeggings over the seasons, and they won't be easy to part with. To ease the transition try tights under a swingy pea coat or under your favorite slouchy dress with a structured blazer on top, remove excess accessories and add some ruby-red lipstick to unleash your inner old-Hollywood glamour.
