Due Date is the perfect lighthearted comedy, starring Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man, Sherlock Holmes) as Peter Highman, an overworked man racing home to witness the birth of his son. Peter is placed on the "No Fly" list due to a misunderstanding involving him and aspiring actor, Ethan Tremblay, played by Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover). The pair must make the 2,000 mile trip from Atlanta to Los Angeles together in a rental car, and the result is painfully funny.
Galifianakis and Downey Jr. make a great team. The film is a tribute to their acting abilities, as the vast majority of the movie is just the two of them in a car. Galifianakis plays the role of an awkward loner, a role he made famous in The Hangover, flawlessly. Viewers can see his insecurity throughout the movie, and his awkward charm eventually wins over the audience. Downey Jr. perfected his role as a cynical smartass and his constant ridicule of Galifianakis makes the movie entertaining.
The hijinks don't stop throughout the film. The audience is constantly kept laughing with scenes like a disabled man beating Peter with a stick as Ethan stands idly by and Ethan visiting a "pharmacist" he found on Craigslist to get weed for his glaucoma. The film also includes some over-the-top scenes like the pair accidentally drinking Ethan's father's ashes and Ethan breaking Peter out of Mexican imprisonment.
However, the overall plot of Due Date isn't anything special and the ending is predictable. Though, the film is kept interesting by the dynamic between Galifianakis and Downey Jr., Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx (Ray, Dreamgirls) also appears in a supporting role. Foxx plays Peter's good friend — who happens to also be the rich ex-boyfriend of Peter's wife. When Ethan discovers this, he immediately causes problems between the two friends of 20 years. Peter gets paranoid and begins to doubt his wife's loyalty, which makes for an interesting plot point. Though he only appears in a few scenes, Foxx adds to the overall outrageous comedy of the movie.
Due Date constantly keeps the audience laughing and Galifianakis and Downey Jr. are perfect together. Though the plot is predictable, the film is entertaining throughout, partly because of its outrageous humor. Due Date is enjoyable for everyone who doesn't mind watching incredibly awkward scenarios. The film would definitely make a great date movie as it has something for everyone and is easily a great choice for a night at the movies.
