What are the perks of continuously creating music for 22 years? There's the experience, the growth as an artist and, to Ben Folds, having long-term fans. "It's really wonderful to see people after a show who saw a gig 15 years ago. It's also great to talk to a 20-year-old who tells me they have heard my music since they were 5. Haha, wow." With so much experience and with such a great accumulation of fans, Folds shows no signs of quitting the business anytime soon.
Currently working with Nick Hornsby, Folds is touring and promoting his newest album, Lonely Avenue. He'll be performing nearby at the Wellmont Theater in Montclair, N.J., on Thursday, Nov. 18. What group of people does Folds like performing to the most? College kids.
"I've always said they are at the height of their musical awareness in some ways. They have the time and energy to take it in, they're now old enough to comprehend enough of what's going on and they need it."
He passionately believes that university students best receive his music, and apparently he isn't the only one. Rolling Stone magazine included Folds on the list of college students' favorite artists.
What is it that makes Folds' music so appealing? Maybe it's his charming voice that accompanies his magical pianist skills, or maybe it's his willingness to collaborate with virtually any artist. "I take things on sort of a day at a time. Katy Perry and I have been threatening to go into the studio and make a song at some point."
With such a widespread variety of artists, it's inevitable for music lovers to find some works by Folds that will fulfill their interests. His quirky sense of humor and easy-going attitude undoubtedly defines his character and creates a sense of comfort between him and his fans. When asked what his next endeavor will be, Folds responded with wit and said, "A cooking show. Then I'll launch a new perfume."
