Anticipation filled the air at Rutgers University Programming Association's concert event on Nov. 11 as a semi-filled audience patiently waited for Ra Ra Riot's arrival to the stage. After sitting through a boring and completely unoriginal opening band, Ra Ra Riot instantly caught the audience's attention with their variety of instruments, bright and spunky clothing styles, and bursting energy. Though they are a relatively young band, as soon as they stepped on stage you could tell they were all about their music. They played hits like "Can You Tell" and "Dying is Fine," and each member of the six-piece band proved to be not only extremely fun but also tremendously talented.
Since most members play multiple instruments, it was insanely impressive to watch them switch around instruments and vocals. The band's collaborative style and large sound truly displayed how well-rounded and versatile each member is. As the lead vocalist, Wes Miles' voice sailed smoothly over the collision of sound including a violin, cello and various instruments of percussion, their orchestral feel was even more moving and beautiful live than on their recordings.
In the middle of their dynamic set, Ra Ra Riot surprised their audience by breaking the carefree and upbeat mood with a haunting ballad on their sophomore album "Orchard". Cellist Alexandra Lawn, on lead vocals, took the audience on an intense, emotional ride with her stunning performance of "You and I Know." Because of her passionate tone and bluesy voice, her stage presence sent chills to everyone listening.
Ra Ra Riot's mass appeal and complete aurora on stage stemmed from how individually different they all are. The moment they stepped on to perform, they each contributed their own element of personality. While Rebecca Zeller, the violinist stayed completely focused and into her music, quirky Mathieu Santos danced around with his bass. Their noticeable personas complemented each other and added to the controlled chaos on stage. Ra Ra Riot's exhilarating performance was enough to have fans screaming for a second encore.
