He had a reality show, founded a successful clothing company and is the drummer of one of the most influential "pop punk" bands of the '90s, Blink-182. Travis Barker has become one of the most recognizable drummers over the past decade and his skill on a drum set and popular image have led to him releasing his first solo album Give the Drummer Some.
Not many drummers release solo albums, but not many drummers can recruit more than 25 hip-hop artists like Barker has. Lead single "Can a Drummer Get Some" features some high-caliber guests including Lil Wayne. However, despite other artists' talents, the song lacks splendor. The typical and redundant chorus, created by Swizz Beats, drones, "Can a drummer get some, can a drummer get some." The lackluster verses by all three guest artists do not start off the alternative and experimental album with much engagement for listeners.
The album picks up with "Jump Down" featuring The Cool Kids, whose alternative sound is more fitting for the Barker drum-assisted track. The combination of Barker's drumming and high-energy artists Lil Jon, Busta Rhymes and Ludacris make up a successful formula for zestful track.
"Devil's Got a Hold" is a song that includes a collaboration with Slaugtherhouse. The newly signed Shady Records artist complements Barker's musical creativity well — the song is one of the strongest on the album. The lyrically talented group shines over Barker's dark drumming, constructing an appealing vibe. However, his collaboration with Kid Cudi is not so appealing. Cudi's mellow flow just does not complement Barker's drums well making his feature a major let down.
The album finishes strong with "Just Chill," a track that contains powerful verses by Bun B and Beanie Sigel. The combination of their styles and sounds make the album work and Barker has proven to be relevant even in the hip-hop genre. Aside from a few mismatches, this drummer deserves some for his effort.
