There’s a plethora of vampires out there today, from Twilight to True Blood, and they won’t be going anywhere for a while. To add to that list is the CW’s newest hit, The Vampire Dairies.
Although the show has no problem getting viewers, it might not be able to keep them. The writers need to up their game if they want to make the show last, and want it to be good as, if not better than, the first few seasons of One Tree Hill.
The Vampire Diaries has one of the hottest casts on TV this season. With Lost heartthrob Ian Somerholder as Damon, Canadian newcomer Nina Dobrev (Degrassi), and American Dreams’ Paul Wesley as Stefan, this show is sure to keep the attention of male and female fans alike. Not a single cast member is less than gorgeous.
The show centers on Elena Gilbert (Dobrev), the sole survivor of a tragic car accident her parents died in. Around her are the two gorgeous vampire brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore.
The two brothers are polar opposites — one good and one bad — both fighting for Elena, who resembles their past love, Katherine. Stefan is trying to be mortal and has given up feeding on humans, but Damon is not ready to give it up, and gains more strength every time he feeds.
The show is lacking in its dialogue, and the writers really could add more. Where a scene could be deep and pull the viewers in, it falls flat. Elena’s character is lacking the depth that would hook in viewers.
The strongest points of the writing are the diary scenes (that the show is named for), which add a lot of depth. Stefan writes in the episode “Friday Night Bites:” “I thought there was hope … that something deep inside something in Damon was still human, was normal. But I was wrong. There is nothing human left in Damon. No good, no kindness, no love. Only a monster, who must be stopped.”
One of the most intriguing things about the show is that it makes you jump, something that Buffy, Angel and Twilight never really did. You never know what’s going to happen. One minute Damon is taunting Stefan, the next he’s reminding Stefan who is more powerful by throwing him into a garage door.
The Vampire Dairies is based off of a ’90s trilogy of books by the same name. Fans’ main objection to the show is that it does not stay true to the original. In the novels, Elena is supposed to be a blonde, her brother Jeremy doesn’t exist, and Vicki is not supposed to be Matt’s sister. Not only that, but major parts of the plot have been changed as well.
Right now, they are counting on the good looks of their cast and the superficiality of the viewers to keep ratings up. We’ll see how the season progresses, and then decide whether or not this show really bites.
